EASTER IN CORDOBA Huge floats bear lifelike effigies of Christ and exquisite renditions of the Virgin Mary accompanied by brass bands, incense and the haunting sound of mournful sung prayers. Hooded penitents, with bare feet and rope belts, carry heavy silver crosses and lanterns through a Catholic Cathedral set in a Mosque. Mystery, faith, ritual and paradox are the key elements of Holy Week in the Andalucian city of Cordoba, where, from Palm Sunday until Easter Sunday, the key moments of the Passion are celebrated and mourned with elaborate processions that meander through the inner city. |
